The study emphasizes that climate change is intensifying drought severity across the continent. A global team of climate researchers determined that unprecedented heat levels serve as the main catalyst for these conditions, overshadowing the influence of seasonal rainfall deficits. Following a historic heatwave in June, European countries are experiencing critically low river levels, widespread water usage bans, and severe wildfires. Data shows that rising global temperatures accelerate moisture evaporation from land and water bodies, creating an environment that is both dry and highly volatile. Even with below-average spring rainfall, it was the temperature spikes driven by climate change that worsened the drought into a critical situation.

The study, published by the World Weather Attribution group, highlights how increasing temperatures deplete natural water reserves. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, explained that the drought is not mainly caused by reduced rainfall but by a warmer atmosphere that causes greater moisture deficits on land. This means that drought risks will continue to grow even in areas where rainfall remains relatively stable. Scientists note that a warmer atmosphere can hold roughly seven percent more water vapor for every one degree Celsius increase in temperature. This enhanced capacity directly leads to greater evaporation of moisture from soil and plant life across the landscape.
By analyzing extensive weather data and employing advanced computer models, researchers assessed how much more likely these drought-inducing weather patterns have become due to climate change. The results show that soils in western Europe are now five times more prone to severe dryness compared to a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, the likelihood of similar soil moisture deficits has risen to 11 times higher. The report also revealed that levels of evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe are about 80 times more probable. Consequently, rainfall shortfalls that previously would not have caused significant drought now lead to far drier soils.
Calls Grow Urgent for Global Emissions Reductions
Dominik Schumacher of ETH Zurich underscored the increasing tendency for soil to dry out prematurely, even during spring, before summer officially begins. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies rapidly, drawing critical moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soil. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created optimal conditions for extensive wildfires. The rapid soil drying process primed the land for ignition, leading to severe fires across multiple nations. The findings confirm that climate change-driven droughts in Europe are altering traditional weather patterns into highly dangerous cycles.
Agricultural sectors across Europe are under unprecedented pressure due to the widespread loss of essential soil moisture. These drought conditions have resulted in historic crop failures across various countries. France is projected to produce its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, indicating a significant disruption to regional food supplies. Similarly, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further threatening supply chain stability. Hydrological impacts are worsening the economic damage, with unusually low river flows disrupting vital cargo transportation. Major shipping routes on key waterways are experiencing disruptions, reflecting the growing severity of the continent-wide water shortage crisis. Reduced river flows threaten energy production, especially in regions reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that recent June was the hottest on record in western Europe. Many countries are already enforcing emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve limited supplies.
Scientists warn that if global temperatures continue to increase, drought conditions could become even more frequent. Experts emphasize that these intense evaporative patterns are occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the immediate danger posed by current emission levels. If global temperatures reach 2.8 degrees Celsius, as some models predict, the likelihood of such drought conditions could double. Without swift and decisive emissions reductions, the continent faces a future of prolonged, scorching, and arid summers.
