European Commission allocates €2.3 million to enhance Africa’s fight against cholera

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has committed €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian aid to combat cholera outbreaks in West and Central Africa. This financial support aims to bolster efforts in Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad. Officials explained that the funds will be used for treatment, disease surveillance, improving access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. The announcement coincides with a rise in cholera cases across several African nations during 2026, with Nigeria experiencing a significant surge predominantly in Borno State.

EU sends €2.3 million to strengthen Africa cholera response
EU emergency funding supports cholera response efforts across four African countries.

Nigeria is set to receive the largest portion of the emergency funding, totaling €1.5 million. The allocation will allow for the expansion of intervention teams, provision of cholera treatment kits, and procurement of other vital supplies. It will also finance the treatment of public water sources and household water systems. Part of the funding will be directed toward strengthening disease monitoring in remote regions. The program additionally covers case management, risk communication, and community outreach efforts as health teams work to halt the spread within affected communities.

According to the latest data from World Health Organization, a total of 90,049 cholera cases have been reported across 18 countries in its African Region up to June 28. These cases include 1,528 fatalities. During the same period, Nigeria accounted for 26,848 cases and 181 deaths. In June alone, the country reported 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths. WHO highlighted that Borno State was responsible for more than 95% of Nigeria’s reported cases in 2026, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno being among the most affected locations.

Funding emphasizes treatment, water safety, and surveillance activities

The Central African Republic will benefit from €500,000 allocated for case management, vaccination campaigns, and water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. The support aims to enhance surveillance, facilitate case detection, and promote community engagement. Additionally, it will aid in conducting safe and respectful burials during the outbreak response where necessary. WHO’s data through June 28 recorded 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country. The European Commission stated that this assistance is part of its emergency humanitarian response to the outbreaks impacting all four nations.

Cameroon will receive €100,000 to help contain the outbreak and improve patient care in affected villages. The funds will support additional humanitarian staff, essential medicines, cholera treatment units, and oral rehydration points. WHO’s data shows 108 cases and six deaths in Cameroon as of June 28. Chad’s allocation of €200,000 will focus on water, sanitation, and hygiene efforts, along with community surveillance and case management. During the same period, Chad recorded 109 cases and three fatalities.

Nigeria’s outbreak surge propels regional case numbers

WHO reported that in June, the African Region saw 27,954 new cholera cases across 12 nations, reflecting a 95% increase compared to May. The same month, 284 cholera-related deaths were documented. Nigeria led the surge with the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. WHO attributed the rise in Nigeria primarily to the escalation in Borno State, where ongoing conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and increased rainfall have heightened the risk of cholera transmission.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Severe instances can lead to rapid dehydration and require immediate medical intervention. The EU’s funding will support initiatives aimed at halting transmission and enhancing access to care in affected regions. The total aid package for the four beneficiary countries amounts to €2.3 million and focuses on expanding treatment capacity, disease surveillance, vaccination where suitable, providing safer water supplies, sanitation, and community outreach during this ongoing outbreak crisis.
