UN urges accelerated global measures as Ebola spreads in DRC

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian leader Tom Fletcher has emphasized the need for swift international response as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to grow across six provinces. Fletcher highlighted to UN member states that this epidemic is advancing more rapidly than previous Ebola outbreaks. He called on governments and donors to boost funding and facilitate humanitarian access. This appeal comes amid rising infection rates, ongoing insecurity, and mounting strain on healthcare services in eastern and northern regions of the country.

UN urges faster global action as DRC Ebola outbreak spreads
DRC Ebola response expands as health authorities confront rising cases across six provinces.

As of September 1, the World Health Organization reported that the outbreak had surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 fatalities. The epidemic is impacting 60 health zones across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described it as the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded and the most rapidly spreading. Since the outbreak’s inception, Ituri remains the primary transmission hub, accounting for the majority of cases.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus, first identified in May 2026. WHO declared it a public health emergency of international concern. According to their reports, by August 26 there were 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC, with totals surpassing 6,000 shortly afterward. The same data indicated 1,293 recoveries up to that date. Health authorities are actively conducting surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory diagnostics, clinical management, and community engagement in affected zones.

Conflict and fragile health systems hinder Ebola containment efforts

The Ebola crisis occurs amidst a broader humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher noted that nearly 11 million individuals require aid due to ongoing conflict, displacement, food shortages, and malnutrition. Violence in eastern DRC has impeded access for health workers and relief personnel. Since activating an emergency response mechanism on June 9, the United Nations has expanded its operations and established humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni to support field activities.

Medical personnel on the front lines are at significant risk. Fletcher stated that over 40 healthcare workers have lost their lives to Ebola, with treatment centers and ambulances also targeted in attacks. WHO data as of July 30 recorded 151 confirmed infections among health and care workers, including 44 fatalities. Emphasizing the importance of infection control, safe clinical practices, and protection, health agencies continue efforts to contain the virus. WHO also pointed out that unidentified transmission chains and deaths outside of treatment centers are complicating efforts to halt the spread.

Funding and vaccine development efforts grow as case numbers climb

The updated 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the DRC calls for $2.1 billion, with $300 million allocated specifically for Ebola response activities. Fletcher urged for increased and adaptable international funding to support both the outbreak response and the broader humanitarian mission. Additionally, WHO outlined that a government-led six-month Ebola response plan requires $1.3 billion. The organization has called on member states to accelerate their contributions as authorities expand surveillance, treatment facilities, laboratory capacity, community outreach, and other public health interventions.

On September 1, WHO also provided revised guidance on vaccination, as researchers explore options against the Bundibugyo virus. The agency stated that current evidence is inadequate to confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers effective protection against this Ebola strain in humans. It recommended administering the vaccine solely within research protocols until further data from clinical trials are available. WHO and Africa CDC continue supporting the Congolese government’s efforts to respond, while health authorities maintain focus on case identification, transmission interruption, and community protection across the six affected provinces.
